The
Samurai Ju-Jitsu Association Malta (S.J.J.A.M.) also known as Samurai Jitsu
Kobudo Association Malta was founded by Master (Rev.) Vincent Sciortino (7th
Dan Ju-Jitsu, 3rd Grade Ko-Budo) in 1988.
Since it was founded, the S.J.J.A.M. has been based on pure Martial Art, self-defence,
individual attention and above all, discipline. These foundations proved their
worth and have contributed greatly towards the continuous raising of standards
and the increase in the number of students. Although the Association is still
young, the number of students is of well over 350, making it the largest Martial
Arts Academy on the Islands.
Consequently, the Association required a bigger General Headquarters to replace
the one at Fgura. The new General Headquarters, inaugurated in 1994, is centrally
situated between Hamrun and Marsa. Other S.J.J.A.M. clubs are located at St.
Paul's Bay, Zurrieq.
Training sessions are held from Monday to Sunday all year round with the exception
of Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, Christmas Day and New Year's Day. The fee for
each training session is Lm1.50c or Lm5 Monthly. Transport from practically
every part of the Island is provided for younger students at no extra charges.
Throughout the year, the Association organizes various events and competitions
amongst which are combat, randori, random attack, sparring, ground-work and
demo competitions. While these competitions are open to all the members of the
Association, the decision to participate is left to each individual, provided
that he/she is over 16 years of age. Sub-junior and junior students (between
5 and 15 years) require a parent's signed consent in order to participate. The
annual main event that the S.J.J.A.M. holds is the National Congress to which
Ju-Jitsu instructors from abroad are invited.
The Samurai Jitsu Kobudo Association Malta is a member of the United Nations
of Ju-Jitsu (U.N.J.J.). Among other member countries in the U.N.J.J. are England,
Belgium, Italy, Spain, Holland, Denmark, Germany, Iceland , South Africa etc
.
The U.N.J.J. holds a yearly International Congress in one of the member countries
for which every year a group of students from the S.J.J.A.M. attends.
The 1996 U.N.J.J. International Congress was held in Malta between the 11th
and 13th October. For this event, technical directors, instructors and students
from all the member countries have attended, together with 500 participants.
